Other Fees & Charges

  • Journal only subscription $10
  • Visitors welcome at Research Library.   Fees  $10 per half day or $20 per full day
  • Research undertaken by IGS volunteer researchers – Initial Research Fee $30 for first hour - additional research fees charged at rate of $25 per hour or part thereof
  • Annual Membership includes email / postage of Society's magazine in February, July, & November
  • Out of town members are entitled to research on their behalf from Society records.

Vi Jordan - A PIONEER IN A MAN’S DOMAIN

The first woman elected as an Alderman in the Ipswich City Council was Ellen Violet JORDAN in 1961.

Known as Vi, she was born in Ipswich 29th June 1913, daughter James Bertie Norman PERRETT, a railway fitter, and his wife Ann Jane, née BROWN and educated at the Brassall State School and the Ipswich Girls Grammar School. She married David JORDAN in 1932.

In 1966 Vi became the first woman from the Labour Party to be elected to the Queensland Parliament, and was the Member for Ipswich West, and retained the position until 1974.

The Queensland Government recognised her achievements when Vi was presented with the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 1977, and in 1978 she was awarded the Order of Australia.

Vi JORDAN passed away on the 7th May 1982 and was buried in the Ipswich Cemetery.
